February 2007’s Wine Tip of The Month

Petite Sirah (pronounced Peh-teet See-rah) may sound related to Syrah & Shiraz, but it’s not.

Petite Sirah is a different grape widely planted in California, as well as some parts of South America. A tannic varietal, PS is often blended with Zinfandel to provide color, texture and heft. Previously, seen only as a blending varietal, today, more winemakers are experimenting with this interesting; fruit forward grape and getting delicious results (see recommendations below).

So why bring up Petite Sirah this month? Because it’s a great grape for grilling not to mention one few people are familiar with as opposed to the other two similar sounding wines. PS pairs wonderful with burgers, lamb, Italian sausage, pretty much anything that’s grilled and begs for red wine.
